Apple has just brought us the closest we have EVER been to 1984.

    Complete fail.

Mainly - you have the option to not buy or use an iPhone. Or any phone for that matter.

You have no idea how technology works, do you?

First of all, ever since the very first cell phones - anyone carrying ANY cell phone is being tracked.

Second, you are tracked HUNDREDS of ways! Credit cards, Bank accounts, store loyalty programs, car black boxes, GPS units, traffic cameras, security cameras, internet use, video game networks, etc etc...

Third: Apple is not the government. The government has to follow specific rules about tracking people (like warrants, etc). Apple is a private corporation that you WILLINGLY entered into a contractual agreement with. Every iPhone user has accepted a terms of service which says that location information will be stored. Period. There is no invasion of anything - if you activated an iPhone YOU AGREED TO IT WILLINGLY.

Fourth: NO ONE CARES WHERE YOU HAVE BEEN. So many people act like all we want in the world is to find out that you went to 7/11 last thursday and got a bag of doritos. No one but 7/11 and Doritos cares, and they already know...

Fifth: All of the people crying foul have not even looked at the real data. The real data is wildly inaccurate from a location tracking standpoint. So you are all bitching about someone knowing where you have been within a mile or two. Unless you are in rural Nevada or Wyoming, there are several other people and lots of possible "locations" in that square few miles. If you are in rural Nevada or Wyoming there are no AT&T towers there to register your location against so you are safe too.

Sixth: If you really really care, jailbreak your phone and delete the file.

Hmm. I've had a G5 DP worked on lately and had great support.

*Edit Nevermind, they are linking the PC mag story too.

My RS store would not let me leave information.

They are waiting till 1pm EST.

Meanwhile, people are twittering their stores
are issuing pin numbers to them.

    What gives?

Man of man, was Radio Shack the worst outfit
to do this through. Don't totally blame them for
    being handed this crap.

Stores were told any ticket generated before 12CST would be voided.

Why anyone would ever choose to buy an Apple product at Best Buy over the Apple Store is beyond me.

Because the price points at the Apple store and the Best Buy where I bought my MBP were the same.

And I'm not convinced this is only an application problem. When I run Handbrake on the Quad G5 alone it uses just over two cores 203% @ about 100fps analysis (1st Pass of 2) speed. If I add a Toast encode while that is happening, Handbrake takes a huge hit down to below 150% @ 70-80 fps analysis while Toast can only use about 130% instead of more alone. So the Tiger OS X seems to have difficulty managing more than one multicore application's core usage allocation up to its maximum capability - IE Tiger is not so MultiCore Enabeled as it could be IE Leopard probably will be much moreso - let's hope that is one of its TOP SECRETS.

When I ran tests on the Mac Pro at the Apple Store last Saturday between Toast and/or Handbrake, their use of more cores alone and together was much better. Handbrake alone can analyze up to around 134fps while writing at about 107 fps using about 1.5-1.75 cores. So while not yet fully optimized for Mac Pro yet, it's already outperforming the Quad G5 significantly. Handbrake would appear to analyze files about 33% faster while writing them about 15% faster while using 1.5 to 1.75 cores. Quad G5 does analysis @ about 100fps and writes about 93 fps (2nd Pass) using up to about 2.2 cores.

Toast 7.1 UB uses Mac Pro cores much more than it does Quad cores - in the range of 280 - 310% IE about 3 cores compared to only about 1.5 cores on the Quad G5 as well as on the Dual Core G5. Unfortunately I didn't have encode times for each of the sample files I brought with me from the Quad so I don't know the real time how much faster that really amounts to. Running simultaneously on the Mac Pro, Toast would use over 2.5 cores while handbrake would use only one or less than one at best.

Together simultaneously on Mac Pro 2.66 it's
    Toast/Handbrake
    2.7 cores/1 core best
    2.5 cores/.75 core worst

Handbrake during Toast is down to as few as 60fps but sometimes up to 100fps as well. Toast meanwhile is Still consuming up to almost 3 cores with Handbrake running at the same time. So Toast would appear to be much more optimized for the Mac Pro's MultiCores than it is for the Quad G5's Multicores. Same could be said for Handbrake - especially since it is not really fully Optimized for Mac Pro yet.

For a programmer dealing with Terminal, Xcode, Netbeans, Eclipse, etc (not graphic intensive softwares), would this macbook air be a better deal than the 13/15" Macbook pro?

    Anyone?

It depends upon the programmer doesn't it?

One concern I would have is wear on the SSD. Due to that I couldn't recommend the current model with it's limited SSD size. Look at how much space your current installation uses and then multiply by 3. That ought to give you enough excess capacity to assure that wear leveling works to your advantage. Considering how my machine is set up that would mean about 350GB of SSD.

In any event why would you even ask if an rumored un released machine is suitable for your usage? There are many factors to consider and to evaluate them you need the machines real specs nit rumors.

No because heterosexuality is the default way the brain works

And your proof of this is......??

Heterosexuality is the default way your brain may work. But just because it's like that for you, doesn't mean it's like that for us all.

What OS will the iPhone be running?
If people want a Treo replacement, you are going to have top consider:
    1. calendar - hopefully you can port over Palm to iCal
    2. contacts - to Mail/Address book
    3. will there be a keyboard - personally I send a lot of mail/texts so would want to keep the "thumb-board" ;)

Apple better not win this case and anyone who thinks that they should are a fool.

Anyone who offers an opinion that people who disagree with them are fools, without even having read the 350+ complaint, might be a fool.

Wich of apple's specific claims do you disagree with?

    Check it out!

    http://barefeats.com/quad06.html

The 3 ghz Mac Pro is neck and neck with the G5 Quad in the Adobe benchmarks, sick considering the fact it's running under rosetta!!

when cs 3 comes out, which will be sometime in the spring of 2007 according to macworld magazine, the mac pro will be "hands down" the best machine across the board on "all" benchmarks concerning adobe software

let's hope we get cs 3 sooner rather than later in 2007 because i would hate to wait until late march

pc world, september issue, mentioned amd's plan for a quad core processor in 2007 and if that happens, some pc box will be faster than our best xeon powered machines...that is, he he, unless we get that quad core K8L amd with their 4x4 motherboard architecture which would enable a desktop to run two quads for a total of 8 amd cores (but the price of such a machine will debut at a very high price and probably won't directly compete with the mac pro)

but for now, apple has the best pro desktop machine dollar for dollar that i have seen and with cs 3 next year, it will be a designer's dream machine better than anything out there in its price range...at least for a few months ;)

I think it is absolutely appalling that you people are calling anyone who just wanted proof that Obama is qualified, per the constitution, to be president (being born in America) a racist. That is an awful big accusation and personally I can't believe the administration at MR allows that kind of talk.

This is exactly why I no longer donate to this site.

    1. McCain was born outside of the US and no one demanded proof.
    2. No one demanded proof of eligibility for past presidents.
    3. Obama released a birth certificate back before the election and people still claimed he was born in Africa
    4. There is not a single piece of evidence to suggest he was born somewhere besides Hawaii - a US state
    5. Obama is black. McCain and all of our past presidents are not.

No, it's not a stretch at all to accuse birthers of being racist.

Yup, heat is no problem. :) Cost on the other hand is. Going from a 2.4 GHz Conroe from a 1.83 GHz Yonah on the low-end is roughly a 30% increase in cost JUST for the CPU.

    Um....
    E6600 Conroe 2.4GHz: Release price $316
    T2400 Yonah 1.83GHz: Release price $294

Not liking Obama does not mean you are racist.

However, since you feel the need to say this, and your signature, I'd guess that you are racist. But you are correct that not liking Obama doesn't mean you are racist, it's just that a lot of his more vocal critics say things that are very racist.

According to Radio Shack, the full, non-contract price, for the iPhone 4 will be $649.99 for the 16GB and $749.99 for the 32GB.

    Seems pretty high to me.

It seems like a preponderance of the issues people have are with the notebooks.

Do you think it could be because Apple has the thinnest laptops on the market which means they sacrifice build quality and heat management?

When I looked at the innards of an iBook G3 it was basically "a mess" in there...nothing looked modular like you would see inside the new Mac pro.

Apple doesn't has the thinnest laptops on the market.

Hehe, I remember Virginia Tech having built the 3rd fastest supercomputer out of 1100 dual powermacs G5. Back then, the XServe G5 wasn't available. You can see that in the MWSF 2004 keynote (minute 25 ff). They later switched to the Xserve G5 when those came out. It had 10.28 TF for just $5.2M.
And I remember that they were very concerned about the lack of ECC memory, and were extremely eager to replace them with Xserves as soon as the G5 model came out.

There are thousands if not more of us who would gladly pony up and stick with Apple.

    Nailed it

Difinitely not. I won't say where I'd agree and disagree with for the rest of it, but that last sentence isn't right. Thousands implies a rather low number. Not nearly enough revenue for Apple to keep working on FCS. ;)
