Yeah i'm sure it can play some games well. But 30fps on Unreal 2004 is not very good. I guess it depends on the games you'd play.

I thought the human eye couldn't detect anything over 30 fps?

itunes 7 looks like a promising upgrade. I like how each type of media will have its own library. syncing with the ipod should be better now.

So I just read up a little on what happened at the Natal/Kinect press conference.

    Basically:
    - They had everyone put on white plastic ponchos. (Kool-aid, anyone?)
    - They had a flying couch and a fake elephant.
    - They showed some horrible casual games that had people jumping around their living rooms like spastic idiots.
    - They assume that no one has coffee tables.
    - They're releasing EyePet and Wii Sports.
    - They invented Skype.

Wow, quite an event. I imagine this one will be talked about for quite awhile. :D

Now don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with Microsoft/Xbox in general. But this was just beyond ridiculous. Then again, I'm not really expecting Sony to do much better with "Move". A little, hopefully, but not much. :)

I don't know, looks to me like a Dell T5500 with no monitor and configured fairly close to the base Mac Pro costs $2962.00 after a $520 discount.

No. Hellhammer is right. The T3500 is comparable to the base-spec single-CPU MacPro. Same CPU, same RAM, just a different graphics card.

Based on murmurings and mooings on the pro sites, I reckon Apple will lose some customers to Avid, if they had originally come from Avid some time in the last 10 years. They're talking about going back to Avid, not to Avid.

I also reckon every kid who has used iMovie in the last few years will start using FCP X in about July. This is the next generation of video editors, and they will far outnumber Avid users. They will be making movies for web distribution. They will be flooding the film schools. They will also have the mad skillz (look at me, sounding like a teenager :D) to turn things over really quickly, something which is appreciated in today's editing environment.

Apple has built FCP X for people who have never used film and probably never will so the metaphor needed to go. Bye-bye bins, hello "smart folders". And a big hello to the do-deca-core, 8TB, 32GB Mac Pro everyone can now justify purchasing.

oops - didn't know - you can download the iPhone/Touch app from the App Store - doesn't do head tracking if no front camera is available.

    Pretty cool!

How do you find it on the App Store?

All is well now, I have a bigadv unit started on it as well as gpu folding. I took some fiddling around trying figure it out but it's cranking now, should see results soon. It did run one normal a3 unit in very quick time and the gpu is hitting about 14k ppd which is slow :p but I think the cpu is hogging all it's cycles.

I'll need to figure out how to adjust things to get them both running at best speed. And when the weather gets cooler I can try oc'ing this rig as well as the other 2 rigs.

glad you got it working! if you think the cpu is taking away from the gpu, then run -smp 11 in your case (12 logical cores right?) that will give a little to the gpu (i have 8 logical cores, and on one machine i run -smp 7 to give to the gpus)

yeah you gotta overclock to get the real points

By the way - I feel like a traitor running 3 (legit) copies of windows for a mac team, Ubuntu is still on some of the disks but not running on anything now. At least I have Mac OSX running on the Mac Pro with maybe another Mac Pro coming next year... sometime...

i don't feel bad really. i still use macs everyday, just not for folding right now.

dang you would really put up some points if you got another mac pro!

I couldn't care less about video, and wireless syncing is likely to be too slow to be useful. However, it recently occurred to me that there's a killer application for wireless in the iPod, and I hope Apple doesn't miss the boat here. They've been going on and on about how so many car manufactures offer iPod integration kits now, but every one of those requires you to pull the iPod out of your pocket/bag/whatever and plug it into the car. It's still kind of a pain.

Imagine having audio wirelessly sent to your car's stereo. The iPod is in your pocket, you're listening on headphones as you walk up to your car.
That's been demo'd at IDF this year... A Passat that had on onboard system that used Wimax to show multiple streams of movies/etc from a UMPC with Wimax.

No teacher has ever had a problem, and the same person who confiscated the MBA has seen me using it multiple times without issue.

no problem with the teacher, then WHY???

There is no policy that restricts the use of personal laptops, although phones are banned. In fact, most of my teachers reccomend and encourage to use of our laptops because they are much better and have better software.

    Call your lawyer lol.. :p

It seems to me that he was just very jealous about the fact he is too low paid to afford a mac and felt the need to try and confiscate it.

you're right :o, some people are jealous with people who can afford that they can't afford..

It really is starting to get very annoying.

Last night I could watch about 30 mins before I lost the connection. Now I have tried it twice, and after about 15 mins it's all gone.

Trying to download the whole stream via HiDownload, but..... also keeps stopping after a couple of MB's. :(

I wonder who has been able to download it completely yet. And even so this person has to generate a torrent fils orso.

I'm not contending that the Macs increasing popularity is solely caused from a perceived "prestige" factor, but that is certainly helping matters. And a trip to your local snooty coffee shop is ground zero for the people who purchase products solely to be seen with them.

Like I said earlier, most of the people here are mac diehards - not fad followers. But I am saying that the majority of the boost Apple is experiencing IS from fad jumpers. Like it or not, it is what it is and it's exactly what Apple marketing wanted to happen.

I live in the SF and I know how you feel! I'll walk into starbucks on Union street (Lambos, benzs, bmws, range rovers, and the ast. Martins parked everywhere) and people are just constantly looking at my computer... I'm sorry that my fraternal twin is a mac and I'm really thankful that I would never put up with windows... ever! I'm not a converted I'm a converter... Mac Plus is my brother and my new macbook pro is my brother from another mother named intel :D . I like the looks of jealousy and I hope people do go out and buy a mac just because of that. I know jobs said the war between Microsoft was over in the '97 Macworld keynote but every die hard mac fan wants to rub bill gates in their own scat. We are better and we are more efficient! I will agree that it is a sad reason to be materialistic and purchase a mac just for stature but it's better them purchasing a mac than a dell :-D

I can't wait to hear about all of your fun ideas for tracking someone who's only 60 feet away. :confused:The 60 foot range limitation doesn't make this exploit pointless, as many in this thread have implied. The technology allows tracking of people who are known to pass certain points, like the doorway of a building or along a certain jogging path. Since the tracking can be automatic, the "spy" doesn't have to be personally within 60 feet of the "victim". Instead, the victim need only pass within 60 feet of any of the surveillance sensors the spy has planted.

So it's reasonable to make the point that this technique wouldn't be worth the trouble because other methods of tracking people are at least as effective and have larger ranges, but it's less reasonable to say that Nike tracking is of no concern because people can see other people when they are 60 feet away.

Not quite true. UMTS uses W-CDMA as it's underlying protocol. W-CDMA is a mixture of CDMA and, to a lesser extent, GSM technologies.

W-CDMA is just an air-interface standard. It's not a mixture of anything. It was originally designed for the Japanese FOMA system and was subsequently adopted by the 3G GSM people.

It is a CDMA air interface, but it's unrelated to IS-95, the popular US standard used by Sprint and Verizon that's frequently called "CDMA" as if the terms are interchangable. It doesn't contain any GSM, and it doesn't contain any IS-95. It is, however, like IS-95, a CDMA system, and UMTS, which uses it, is a version of GSM.
