A more fluid UI. Things should move the way they do when you are in expose and hit the space bar and then toggle between windows--that looks and feels fluid. You should be able to work with one window at a time with only it highlighted the way a window is highlighted in expose (so basically the expose interface, but let you edit the active window). To be clear, I do also mean that the rest of the screen would still be dimmed. When you hover over the menu bar it would light up, and the dock would etc, as well. But I think an environment where only the front window is lit could be marvelous in certain scenarios. As it is now, when you click on a window you've found through expose and you return to the jumble of windows, it's just sort of overwhelming. Also, expose will help you find a window you've dragged to the bottom of the screen, but once you find it with expose and click on it, it'll still be hidden at the bottom of the screen instead of moving to middle of the screen.

The dock at the bottom of the with naked icons that lap over other windows is too overwhelming looking too. Make all icons a square-ish shape like iOS icons and make the dock something much simpler than the shimmery tray it is now.

The menu bar will eventually need to go away. I'm not sure it can yet. I imagine the functions of the menu bar will go into the dock eventually as right click options or that Apple may move toward applications having all functions available maybe not as menus in windows, but in some way incorporated into the windows. I'm not sure what will happen exactly, but I know Apple likes the iOS concept of the app becoming the device. When you open Maps on an iPhone, it's a Maps machine, etc. So I think we will see a move toward even more simplicity. The Mac will become more like a very simple appliance that retains its power. I think Apple is considering that with the removal of title bars from Quicktime X and the album viewer in iTunes 10.

So to sum all of that up, everything looks junky with lots of windows scattered all over and the dock looks messy. Clean that up. Apple could do a lot of fundamental changes in the UI's look and behaviors. It's in no way at an end point of reaching a pinnacle of perfection. I haven't used Windows 7, but it looks like it may be continuing to make progress in appearance and behaviors, and there's no reason for Apple to not continue changing, which they haven't dramatically done since the very first version of OS X, in terms of UI. In fact the proposed single window mode of OS X that was dropped before its release may be due for a comeback in some new incarnation!

On to Spotlight. Is it just me or did Spotlight used to be a lot better? There are so few sorting options and by default it displays so much junk (web pages you've viewed, etc). Also, if you are constantly recording to the disk, Spotlight will not index and doesn't tell you this. Spotlight should have an indicator of whether it is up to date or not and a progress bar of when it is updating. The only way to tell right now is to go into activity monitor after stopping recording and let MDS start running and wait for it to return to 0% processor to know you can continue with disk recording activities (video recording in my case).

Safari seems to be the best browser on the Mac, but it takes up a whole lotta RAM.

I am sure there are more things I will think of in time . . .

I got a lot of what I asked for today! Pretty happy with the direction the OS is taking.

they have had crowd sourced apps that do this in the app store. they were useless. and i'm not going to send data to the crowd database while i'm driving with my kids in the car. illegal and dangerous

Yeah, reading the app description is a little frightening about people reporting accidents and whatnot. But it also uses data regarding location and traffic without manual user input. I might try it out, price is right.

I think the G3 shuffle will be built right into the little earbuds. No wires. Beats me how you'd control it. Maybe tap it with a finger? Untill it disapears completely there is always room to make it smaller.

Don't laugh. Someone must have said once "how smal can theymake eyeglasses? then they invented contact lenses and then laser surgury. Poof the glasses disappered.

All I reayy want to see however is for the wire to be gone in the next revision.

That would be cool. iPod Shuffle (USB stick) -> iPod Shuffle (clip) -> iPod Shuffle (earbuds) -> iPod Shuffle ear implants.

    Thats totally bogus.
If they thought you having a laptop around school is a threat to a network and took it away from you, it is a pre-emptive "attack" in order to make their network safe, but according to law, you can't do something pre emptive UNLESS it was told by the rules at your school when the school started that laptops were not allowed at all.
If you knew that, you should go ask nicely :P

I would love for it to encompass all iTunes media purchases, including movies and TV shows as well. I'm feeling a crunch with the drives in my Macs filling up with content very quickly. I wish Apple just kept track of what I "own" and let me play it based on a license that floats in the cloud. Should be doable right?

Amen. I have more than my Mac and external drives can hold.

But, at least they include a HDMI cable and don't forget to tell you that you can't get full HD without it, eh Sony.

Oops, that was a little console war-ish of me.

Not at all.....since others are adding complete costs of accessories to the price of the Xbox 360, it's only fair of you to mention that one needs to add the cost of the HDMI cable to the PS3 so that it can actually be in "true" high definition (since it is not high definition out of the box). Has that little tid-bit actually been forgotten by everyone already? So add another $20-$100 depending on how "good" of an HDMI cable one will want/need/be told is the best, etc. :)

The Premium 360 was already giving you HD out of the box and now the Elite will give you HDMI HD out of the box, just as many had hoped for. The PS3 does not give you that. Sony needs to now step up and add this cable for free to their PS3. Then if each company keeps trying to "one-up" the other eventually we'll have consoles that are cheaper, cooler, quieter, come with all accessories one will ever need, and 10 free games :)

In the end; Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo are all out to make a profit. There are many things each could do with their consoles to make them better for us, but they will only do these things once they feel they need to and cannot do much more with the current pricing/configurations. Right now, people are willing to pay these prices so why would a profit driven company want to reduce prices at this point?

    I'd like to see:
-360 Elite with wireless for the current premium price and maybe an HD-DVD version for $100 more
-Nintendo Wii for $199 with the ability to connect a USB hard drive (as mine is filling up with all the VC purchases)
-PS3 $100 price drop and included HDMI/Component Cables

All 3 of these companies should do this before Christmas. I'll consider a PS3 once the price comes under $500 and includes the cable (mainly for Blu-Ray). The other 2 I have but I'd consider selling my 360 to get a newer one if the elite contained the above.

Hopefully they will all keep updating their consoles randomly, as I tend to have video game consoles longer than I have computers or cars :) I'd like to upgrade a console every now and then if it's a little better.

You think a 40GB drive can hold OS X, iLife, a couple of additional apps, and large sized iTunes and iPhoto libraries? You must have forgotten to include the "just kidding" smilie.

Let's do some quick math. A small iPhoto library like mine is 2000 photos. I have a 5 megapixel camera, half the images have red eye removed or some other change (iPhoto keeps the originals and the edited copies) so I have roughly 3000 files averaging 1.8MB each or 5.4GB. That's a small iPhoto library. You also want to hold a large iTunes library which implies a 30 or 60GB iPod owner.

So without going any further we need about 10GB for OS X and all the bundled apps, another 10GB for a fairly small iPhoto library, 15GB to half fill an iPod and 25GB to hold two hours of footage from your digital video camera. For all practical purposes, remembering that hard drives don't run well without a bunch of free space for editing, virtual memory, etc., we've just filled an 80GB hard drive (formatted capacity 74GB).

So I've just proved that the Mac mini is fatally flawed for many users because it's physically too small to hold a standard 3.5" HD. If it had been even one inch bigger it could have not only held more, it would have been less expensive to manufacture.

I was surprised when they announced the edu iMac at only $899 and so the announcement that it's now restricted to institutional purchase makes sense. Regarding the specs I figure Apple must have gotten a really great deal on 80GB HDs because in the retail market there's only a $10-20 difference between 80GB and 160GB. Heck there's only a $35 difference between 80GB and 250GB.

alep85 said that 80% of the consumer market doesn't need anything more than integrated graphics. Obviously those people are over the age of 30 and don't have children. You don't use the internal drive anyway. You build a 400GB FW drive with a $100 400GB ATA Drive and a $40 FW Case. That's your boot drive on these Minis not what comes inside them. Mini sits right on top of the FW Drive. Not a space problem. Runs way faster that way as well. I would never buy-use a mini without booting off a big external drive like this.

Just wondering if anyone has upgraded to 8GB with the regular MacBook (not the pro). I saw people talking about it above but didn't see where anyone was successful.

Also, would it take the same exact RAM as the Pro?

I took 8 GB of OWC RAM out of a 17" Macbook Pro and put it in my 2008 Aluminum Unibody Macbook (NOT pro) and it works wonderfully. I have not tried putting all 8GB in a white macbook.

Those of you with MBs or MBPs with heat issues - get Fan Control Pref Pane.

It works, I have a RavA MBP2Ghz that runs cool to the touch, even when maxxed out running BOINC.

No problems here with the update - beeped instead of flashing lights, then a progress bar, reboot and a dialog box after startup that said the firmware was successfully updated.

Doubtful those numbers are accurate, willing to bet it's more a marketing stunt at this point considering they could price it much higher and sell all this years units without a problem.. With potential profits like this, it's only a matter of time before GM heads down the wrong road, again. Makes no sense really.

There was never any logic to using Woodcrest across the board - only for the Quad. Conroe is just as fast, cheaper and cooler for dual core models. :)

Woodcrest has the same TDP as Conroe, so it's not cooler.

It's interesting how large the magnitude of disconnect between the planned purchase estimates and the actual marketshare is for Macs (e.g.. 17-18% of people planning to buy computers state they will get a Mac, but only 5-7% actually do). In contrast the numbers later for HP seem relatively close to their actual marketshare numbers.

They don't offer an interpretation, but one tempting one is that people who are very strongly considering getting a Mac get dissuaded as they get immediately close to purchase, to a much greater extent than PC buyers.

    That is a big issue.

We all want a big house or drive a BMW. But when we look at the numbers we realize we can not afford one or would rather save money and buy something else instead.
